“The Major will have my hide if he hears of this,” Tobin growled.

“Then we must make sure he does not hear,” Meg replied as she placed her thick glasses on her nose to complete her disguise, having pulled her dark hat low.

“I don’t think this will work.”

“You have made that clear, but I must try to do something.”

“I should not have told you she was here,” he opined as she saw him check his dagger in his boot and his pistol in his waistband.

“You did the right thing. I will make certain the Duke understands I gave you little choice in the matter, if it comes to that.”

“I feel ever so comforted. What if yer uncle spies ye and captures ye?”

“He will not think me anything other than the servant I appear to be.”

Tobin scanned her groom’s trousers with a muttered curse, as she relished the freedom provided. He was still shaking his head when he rapped on the ceiling of the carriage and they alighted a street away from Hawthorne House. It was dark and the wind was biting, even through the thick coat and gloves she wore. With Meg following Tobin, they crept like criminals around the back of the house, and she slid her glasses down low on her nose so she could see.

Trembling with a gnawing fear of discovery, she forced herself forward, knowing this must be done. A staying hand held her back as two grooms walked along the path from the house to the stables talking jovially with one another. She had been so lost in her thoughts she had not noticed them. When they were out of sight, Tobin motioned for her to follow him as he moved towards a window. Having never been in London, Meg was unfamiliar with the house. Sitting less than five feet in front of the window, with his back to her, was her uncle. She smothered a gasp as she saw Amelia across the table from him dining on their supper.

“She looks well,” Meg whispered with relief as she stared lovingly at the familiar copper locks and bright eyes of her sibling.

“Aye,” Tobin agreed, looking dumbstruck. Meg would have laughed in any other circumstances, but she had to find a way to get a message to her sister. Fingering the letter in her pocket, she stepped back to survey the house.

“If only I knew which room was hers.”

“Faith, me lady, ye are not climbing up the side of the house!” he commanded under his breath.

“I most certainly am. How else am I to leave
